121-year-old Whiskey Found in Scotland


When repairing an old bridge in the highlands of Scotland, in one of the supports, workers found a “time capsule” with things from 1894, among which was a bottle with a liquid similar to whiskey. In addition to the bottle, the 1894 newspaper and a paper scroll appeared in a rusted metal box. All items went to the museum collection of the nearby city of Newtonmore.

There are a lot of people who want to try 121-year-old whiskey, but it’s worth remembering that, unlike wine, whiskey in bottles and not in barrels does not improve with age, so it is not known whether this ancient liquid can, in principle, be pleasant to taste and whether any fortress remained in it.

Prior to this, the bottles found in Antarctica were considered the oldest whiskey, which remained thereafter the unsuccessful expedition of Ernest Shackleton to the South Pole in 1907. Scientists even conducted a test, and the taste turned out to be much smokier and tart than everything that is now. Despite the presence of volunteers, the drink of 1894 is not yet decided to open.
